The challenge was to create an alcoholic beverage deeply connected to a place. I responded by crafting a bold brand and visual identity for Ivankiv, an artistic Ukrainian mixed vodka brand, with a mission to challenge a vodka market traditionally overshadowed by Russian influences. In the devastating war in Ukraine, the Ivankiv region was attacked, and many of Maria Prymachenko’s beautiful, iconic artworks—symbols of Ukraine’s soul—were destroyed in a deliberate attempt to erase the nation's culture. This tragedy moved me to reimagine her art, not just to preserve it, but to send it out into the world as a powerful beacon of hope and defiance, a tribute to a culture that refuses to be silenced.
Maria was known not only for her art but for her generosity, often welcoming friends into her home, pouring them a glass of homemade vodka, and gifting them her paintings. Ivankiv carries forward this tradition, sharing Ukraine’s cherished horilka recipe, a spirit that is deeply intertwined with the nation's history and often called the “soul of Ukraine.” Now, more than ever, it's time for the world to experience this gift—a celebration of Ukrainian culture and tradition.
The typography for the brand is inspired by tradition Ukrainian lettering originating from Kyiv which is local to Ivankiv, This sans serif typeface is versatile whether than be with the logotype in bold or regular with titles. Keeping it simple with the visual identity using neutral colours allowing the emphasis to always be on the on the cans and Maria's unique designs to each flavour.
My approach was clear and confident, driven by a unique insight: research showing the vodka market is in need for something refreshing and exciting—a brand you can truly love. This is shown within the brands cross-application identity whether that be with an iconic social media design or a playlist showcasing the depth of talent within the Ukrainian music scene.
Taking in mind that Ivankiv seeks to transcend borders and showcase Ukraine's rich cultural heritage and resilience, the digital identity is important in getting the Ivankiv message across. The app and website are key features of our brand in how we create an experience with our products. These interfaces was designed to allow our range of imagery to stand out and be the main focal point of the design.
Ivankiv is more than just an alcohol brand; it extends to a lifestyle with our merchandise that spans across a variety of products, allowing you to showcase your appreciation for Maria and the beauty of Ukrainian naive art in every aspect of your life.
My long-term aim for this brand is to become a major player in the vodka market for years to come. I want the brand to change the industry in that you buy into the brand story and pay for not just the alcohol but the Ivankiv experience.
